Ontario auto insurance is changing

You might already know that more changes are coming to Ontario auto insurance starting on June 1, 2016. One good change that has already been put in place is the mandated insurance discount for those of you who install winter tires. Now more reforms will become effective June 1st onward, which will give you more choice and control over your car insurance rates. Here are some key points:

You don’t need to do anything now

First of all, you don’t have to take any action now. When your policy is due for renewal, you will be notified of the changes happening and the choices you may wish to consider. Until then, your current policy remains in full effect exactly as it is written.

Accident benefits are changing

Hopefully you will never be in one but since accidents do happen, this is when you would receive accident benefits to help you physically and financially recover. These Medical, Rehab and Attendant Care benefits can include the cost of physiotherapists and/or chiropractors, or getting help cleaning your house. Some of the limits for these coverages are being combined and reduced, which in turn may reduce your rates. In addition, new optional accident benefits will be available for you to consider according to your needs.

Deductibles for comprehensive coverage may change

You may not have comprehensive coverage on your policy because it is optional. It covers you when your vehicle is damaged from things other than accidents such as vandalism, theft, or fire. The standard deductible for comprehensive is increasing from $300 to $500, and usually higher deductibles mean lower insurance rates for you.
