Company Overview

Tugo Insurance, like many insurers that focus on travel, only offers a handful of coverage options, but their plans more than offer comprehensive risk protection if a customer needs it.

Tugo’s insurance plans are best suited for those who travel on personal vacations and trips (as opposed to business) and who need a local company that they can count on when they’re travelling in North America.

Some features Tugo customers have come to expect:

  • Personal service from a smaller insurer
  • Affordable travel insurance options
  • MyTuGo, a user-friendly online platform to make claims and manage policies

From the company’s pride in being the first company in Canada to offer protection for missed flights, to Tugo’s current status as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies, the team at Tugo works extremely hard to make sure its clients are protected any time they’re traveling, which is a great comfort for Canadians looking for personal service, not just complete protection. As a smaller company, Tugo also has relationships with Ontario brokers on whom they depend to connect customers with great travel insurance policies.

Advantages of Tugo Travel Insurance

Tugo Insurance is considered a top travel insurer in Canada, and that’s no surprise when considering some of the company’s major advantages, not the least of which is the company’s intimate understanding of the community it serves. Because Tugo is a smaller company, it makes a larger effort to offer a personal touch to customers, and there are many customer testimonials to back this up. The company gets great reviews from clients, due in large part to the following advantages:

  • The ability to work with a responsible company. Tugo prides itself on being both socially conscious and environmentally responsible, being recognized for donations to various charities in the community as well as taking part in programs that help offset global emissions and protect the environment. As an example, the company prints its physical policies on post-consumer recycled paper.
  • MyTugo, an intuitive policy management platform. Just because Tugo Insurance isn’t as large as some of its competitors doesn’t mean it can’t offer the same convenience for users. Policy holders can access their policy, make and resolve claims and buy new coverage, all from a handy widget on Tugo’s site called MyTugo.
  • Affordable coverage for almost every customer. Because the company knows their customer base so well, no one is left out from its available policy options. Tugo offers travel coverage for seniors, students, residents and even foreign visitors to Canada. These plans range from the minimum coverage to comprehensive plans, but Tugo offers affordable options for every budget.

Tugo Insurance has clearly made a sizable effort to invest in their community, and this has helped them gain a reputation across Canada as a responsible, friendly provider of reliable solutions in travel insurance.

Tugo Insurance Products

Tugo offers travel coverage for an array of different populations, with different coverage options available tailored to each group.

Canadian Residents

Tugo covers this broad group, because the company wants to provide health and risk coverage when a client leaves Ontario, Canada or even the continent of North America. When a customer has to leave their provincial insurance at home, Tugo has them covered, offering the following protections:

  • Emergency medical
  • Trip cancellation and interruption
  • Accidental death and dismemberment
  • Non-medical package
  • All-inclusive holiday packages

Travelers also have the option of adding on:

  • Rental car coverage
  • Baggage protection
  • Coverage for sports related perils

Seniors

More narrowly, seniors in Ontario have specific needs when traveling that other groups don’t and Tugo ensures that these needs are protected, offering the same protections and optional add-ons, minus the all-inclusive holiday packages.

Foreign Visitors

Tugo Insurance also makes it a point to cover those who are traveling in Canada, or have recently moved and are waiting for their provincial insurance to kick in, with the following protections:

  • Emergency medical
  • Trip cancellation or interruption
  • Accidental death and dismemberment
  • Non-medical package
  • A customized set of protections, bundled as “Visitor to Canada”

Visitors can also add on risk protection for:

  • Sports injuries
  • Baggage
  • Rental car

Students

Students studying in Canada or abroad are covered through Tugo Insurance’s convenient plans, providing protection for hospital use and medical insurance, as well as accidental death and dismemberment.

Don’t buy from Tugo horrible service… never answer their emergency phone!!

While in the USA I had a pedal bike accident (slipped on some gravel) and I tried calling the number on our insurance card, no answer. When they did get back to us 4 hours later (while we were entering the dr. office at urgent care) my husband was told this would be our initial visit and nothing else would be covered! Had they answered their phone and talked to us, we would have gone to a hospital where he could have gotten an MRI. He ended up with a torn rotator cuff and is having surgery in Canada. We had to pay for the MRI ourselves, no Physio, nothing. The only thing they paid for was a $19.32 prescription!

Complete ripoff

DO NOT BOOK THIS INSURANCE COMPANY. If I could leave less than one star, I would. Very unimpressed with customer service and not being able to access the BASIC SERVICES included in our rate for flight delays. I even called them “benefits” on the phone and was reminded that they weren’t actually benefits but basic services. Also these “services” are actually operated through a third party so I don’t even know what Tugo does.

Very convoluted, was difficult to contact the customer services agent, had to wait for call backs each time. Only the hospital line is 24hr, we tried to call early in the morning and did not get through, then boarded our 8hr flight so a call back would not have even been possible. The website would not work for us, and even this issue needs to be submitted to the IT department for proof. The agent then had the audacity to try to lecture me about doing things last minute, as though I had any control over flight delays and being able to predict them in advance?

I’m just grateful we only had to argue about the flight delay insurance, and not actually deal with anything serious. The “instant cash deposit” is a farce, we have to submit all emails and proof of delays, including our boarding passes, only to MAYBE get reimbursed in 6-8 weeks.
Book literally any other travel insurance company and you will be happier than we are.

Scammers

They don’t like to pay the bills. The hospital and image centres sued us because TuGo wouldn’t pay. Stay away from this Outfit. Horrible experience.

Tugo loves premiums and the expense of your health

Have an annual travel plan that allows trips up to 60 days at which point you can pay to extend as many times as you like. At one point we had a claim and then they refused to extended it again demanding we return to Alberta to reset the 60 day max. Funny how they take my money -tens of thousands of dollars till till i actually use the insurance then they refuse and expect me to return to a pandemic in Alberta to reset it. Scam of insurance – all they care about is taking your money and could care less about your actual health

Colleen is an employee

Pretty sure Colleen is an employee and has been consistently giving out 5 star reviews both here, anywhere else, and on Google reviews as well. I’m neutral to the company but I’d just like to point that out. In general, seems like reviews are more negative than positive. Just some food for thought….

Stay away from these scammers!

STAY AWAY! If I could give them negative stars I would.

I’m a graduating international student who’s been in Canada for a few years. The insurance plan that is provided through my school is about to expire so I’m shopping for other plans. Tugo said I’m ineligible for their plans because I’ve seen a doctor after I arrived in Canada A FEW YEARS AGO. This is ridiculous and obviously a lie. Based on this, any graduating student who’s ever had the flu is ineligible for their plans.

I would strongly recommend that you stay away from these scammers. I’ve heard that they don’t cover everything the policy says. They’ll twist things to make sure your claim isn’t covered.

don"t bother

Great on the phone until you have a legitimate claim. Not interested in hearing your horror story. Don’t bother with these providers (lack of providers).
